Praat: Doing Phonetics by Computer

Catherine Rogers highly recommends Praat: Doing Phonetics by Computer (www.praat.org) by Boersma and Weenink for teaching or research, noting that it provides tools for acoustic analysis, sound recording, signal editing, speech synthesis, stimulus presentation, data collection, and statistical procedures. Some procedures may even be automated through the use of scripts. Anne Olson describes the Listening and Communication Enhancement Training (LACE™, DVD version) by Neurotone, Inc., as a sentence-based program that adult hearing aid users can use at home or in the clinic to improve listening skills. She notes that this adaptive auditory training program may be useful for persons who do not have access to a computer or who may have difficulty operating one.
